The Philosophy of Survival Fitness

The Philosophy of Survival Fitness is Well Rounded Fitness That Prepares You For Anything. It is that simple. I wrote a whole article going in depth about what Survival Fitness is and you can read it here. It is a program I created utilizing my knowledge as an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and my knowledge of the outdoors and survival.

Survival Fitness Focuses on Getting You Prepared and Improving Your Quality of Life.

The great thing about this program is that you can train Survival Fitness exclusively or just add some of the workouts into your current routine. You will get to experience multiple different training philosophies and programs, and you can delve even deeper into them on your own. I always share information so you can start to build your own program, and learn what you really enjoy and need to focus on. We are all different after all, so I don’t believe in a one program fits all style of programming.

Survival Fitness will give you confidence, ease of mind, and get you outdoors and experiencing new things. No just sitting in a stinky gym everyday in Survival Fitness.

Why did I create The Wild West Survival Fitness Academy though, what is the thinking behind the programming?

Preparation

The number one belief that helped me to form the ideas behind the Philosophy of Survival Fitness is Preparation. I will not hide the fact that I am a prepper. I am a survivalist, and it is 100% my belief that I need to live my life prepared for the worst. I have even written an entire training called “Becoming Primitive” that you can learn about here.

This doesn’t mean that I am a crazy guy collecting toilet paper, living in a shack in the woods, and building perimeter land mines. Survival is a way of life, and simply a different manner of thinking. Instead of thinking that I will deal with emergencies if they happen, I think in a different way. I am of the belief that emergencies absolutely will happen, and if I have not already prepared for them, it will be too late once SHTF.

I am not obsessed with the idea that aliens will attack the earth, zombies will eat all of our faces, or a meteor will crash to earth causing the next Apocalypse. I don’t know what will happen. However, I know that there are many things that could create an emergency situation and effect the way I live. War, Weather, Space Weather, Riots, Fire, Natural Disasters. All of these things are absolutely capable of creating an emergency situation for myself and my family, and when something does happen, I don’t want to be telling myself, “Man you should have prepared. You aren’t going to get your family through this because you are so out of shape.”

I Know What It Takes

I believe that the main reason I have this survivalist mind set, which has influenced my Philosophy of Survival Fitness so much, is because I have been in a life or death emergency. When I was 18 years old, I set out on a river trip with my father. The trip that would make me a man was the joke. Little did we know that we would be stuck in the middle of a Flash Flood, lose almost all of our supplies, lose each other for 13 hours, and lie stranded and injured suffering from hypothermia with little water or food for days.

This experience changed my life forever. I learned what I am capable of. I learned that in these situations you will be pushed beyond the boundaries you thought existed in your mind and your body. At the time I was luckily in amazing shape, playing Soccer at an Elite Level and training to run marathons. If I was not in that good of shape I might not have been able to fight the current and stay above water long enough. If I wasn’t that strong I would have never been able to fight for miles through flash flooding side streams and towering cliffs.

I am writing a book about our experience together on that river, and it will be a great read for outdoors enthusiasts, survivalists, river runners, and parents alike. Sign up for the newsletter if you would like to be updated when it is available.

Well Rounded Fitness

The Philosophy of Survival Fitness, as I stated before, is all about Well Rounded Fitness That Prepares You For Anything.

Why is Well Rounded Fitness So Important? We already know that it is important to be prepared for anything, because just like I was caught in a flash flood, emergencies can happen at anytime. Why Well Rounded Fitness Though?

This is the main difference between the Philosophy of Survival Fitness and the Philosophy of almost all other Fitness Regimens. We are not just training for health or aesthetics or even strength. We are training to have prepared bodies and minds, that can take anything that comes their way.

Well Rounded fitness is the only way to prepare for anything. You need to be strong, flexible, agile, and have great endurance so you can be prepared to lift, travel, maneuver, and escape. The Philosophy of Survival Fitness is based of 5 Elements and you can learn more about them here if you would like.

STRENGTH

FLEXIBILITY

BODY COMPOSITION

AGILITY

Quality of Life

The Philosophy of Survival Fitness is about much more than just preparation though, it is also about Quality of Life.

I have been in amazing shape. I have been fat and out of shape. I have been healthy, and I have been sick and injured. Well Rounded fitness is the key to opening up doors in your life. You can learn from my experience, knowledge, and mistakes when it comes to fitness.

I want to be able to do it all! I want to be able to keep up with my kids, and my grand kids. I want to take them out into the world to experience amazing things. In order to do this, I need to be strong enough to hold them, have the endurance and stamina to travel distance, flexible enough to move and avoid injury, have a healthy body composition that keeps me alive and young, and agile enough to play.

The same 5 Elements, this time keeping me prepared, but also improving my quality of life.

Well Rounded Fitness in the Philosophy of Survival Fitness pulls from multiple different schools of thought, training styles, and programs. We delve part way into all of them, but never spend all of our time just focusing on one Element. Click Here to Learn More About Survival Fitness and How We Train.

It Isn’t A Competition

The Philosophy of Survival Fitness Is All About Celebrating Preparation and Success.

The easiest way to Burn Out and Get Injured is to make everything a Competition.

We aren’t going to focus on how much you bench, or how great you abs look. Quite frankly in Survival Fitness we don’t give a shit! We want to celebrate you being able to do things you couldn’t do before. We will celebrate your successes, including losing weight and hitting a new PR, but not for the sake of vanity. We will celebrate how much more these milestones will leave you prepared.

We don’t want you trying to lift too much weight to show off, and we can’t have you pushing yourself through grueling CROSSFIT style workouts that can lead to injury. One of the MOST DETRIMENTAL THINGS TO SURVIVAL IS INJURY! We want you to push your limits, but we don’t want you pushing to the point of injury.

Well Rounded

When you think about the Preparation aspect of the Philosophy of Survival Fitness it can seem a bit dark. Preparation isn’t dark and scary. Being Prepared will give you confidence. Confidence in the fact that you are more prepared for anything that comes your way than most people.

The Well Rounded Fitness aspect of the Philosophy of Survival Fitness will improve your Quality of Life. Allowing you to do more things. You will be ready to run a 5k with your friends, go rock climbing, kayak down a river, hike a mountain, do strongman workouts in your yard, or just hit a new PR on the squat rack. All of these things will build your confidence and improve your Body Composition.

Out exploring again. I love hiking around Flagstaf Out exploring again. I love hiking around Flagstaff and catching the peaks from so many different views. At this point I think I have seen them from every possible angle, and it still never gets old. These mountains are such an important place spiritually, and I’m lucky to enjoy them. If you are ever out exploring in this part of the world, please remember these mountains are not just a place to ski, hike, ride your bike, or play. You are walking in a place with huge significance to people. This is a spiritual place, and deserves your respect and protection. Give love to this place and you can feel it come right back to you. #sanfranciscopeaks
